Instead of sitting behind a table and answering questions, Calgary Southeast candidate will meet citizens in a more casual environment on Thursday evening.  Although he does still plan to answer all questions.  Brett Spencer is the Green Party Candidate and he has made efforts to organize an all candidate forum but NONE of the other parties responded so we are hosting a Meet the Candidate (singular not pluril) open house at the South Fish Creek Recreational Centre.    The hours of the open house will be from 6:30-8:30pm.

“Where is the debate on health, on clean water, on education and opportunities for youth, for Canada’s First Nations? They have been excluded and ignored in this election,” said Ms. May. “Canadians care and want action. The Green Party will deliver.”

Brett Spencer, the Calgary SE Candidate added “It is simply shameful that government has been unable to affect change and progress with regard to drinking water for the 116 communities with advisories.  Shawn Atleo, the National Chief for the Assembly of First Nations states that in its current form, Bill S-11 is insufficient to get 63,000 First Nation Canadians clean water.”

The Green Party is committed to justice and equality in First Nations education, economy, housing, health, and governance. In addition to eliminating the out-dated Indian Act, the Green Party will:

• Honour inherent rights of self-government.
• Implement the 1996 Report of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, with true nation-to-nation negotiations.
• Ensure that Canada upholds the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
• Restore the $5.1 billion commitment of the Kelowna Accord.
• Invest $800 million a year in First Nations education, safe drinking water, and improved housing.
• Respect the Sparrow decision (recognizing the Aboriginal right to fish).
• Respect the Haida decision (the right of Aboriginal peoples to be not just consulted but their concerns accommodated regarding decisions that may impact their resources and their future).
• Respect the Douglas Treaties of southern Vancouver Island.
• Deliver health care, education and other services in a way that incorporates traditional practices and recognizes the role of extended families and elders.

“The union has recognized that the Canada that we love is in peril and that it will take non-partisan cooperation to protect our jobs, social programs, and infrastructure,” said May.

“What is most important is that Canadians become re-engaged in democracy and make their voice heard. All across the country the Greens have so many excellent candidates who if elected will make Canada a better place,” said May. “I am appreciative of all the support for me to win in my riding. I know that I can bring a fresh voice to Canadian politics."

SIDNEY -  Support for Elizabeth May is surging in Saanich-Gulf Islands (SGI), prompting Stephen Harper and former Finance Minister Jim Flaherty to make a stop in the riding at this critical juncture in the campaign in a desperate bid to shore up support.  Stephen Harper has been in the riding three times since the beginning of the year.

"They are obviously seeing the same things we are - Elizabeth May is poised to make history by winning the riding of Saanich-Gulf Islands," said Jonathan Dickie, Campaign Manager for the Elizabeth May campaign in SGI.

Ms. May has been drawing large crowds and tremendous applause at rallies and debates across the riding. Lawn signs have been impossible to keep in stock and there have been a continual flow of volunteers, including many former Conservatives.

"We’ve felt a growing momentum for the last couple of weeks. This third visit by Stephen Harper confirms it," said Dickie. “The other parties know Elizabeth May is within reach of winning this race. This is a rallying call to all Elizabeth’s supporters. On the 2nd of May, vote for May.”

The May campaign will hold a giant rally on Wednesday, April 27th at the Viscount Aero Center Hangar in Sidney where Elizabeth May will be joined by her Deputy Leader former-NHL star Georges Laraque.  The crowd will also be treated to speeches from former CBC host Arthur Black, author William Deverell, Order of Canada and Order of BC winner Vicky Husband, with music by Chilliwack band member Bill Henderson, who wrote a special song for Elizabeth.

When Can I vote?

Vote at advance polls, Friday, April 22, Saturday, April 23 and Monday, April 25.

Advance polls are open from 12.00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m..

What do I need to vote?

You will need to prove your name and address to be registered to vote.

You can do this at the polling station, or in advance. To regsiter in advance follow the instructions on Elections Canada's websiste here.

To prove your identity and address you have three options:

1) Show one original piece of identification with your photo, name and address. It must be issued by a government agency.

Example: drivers license.

2) Show two original pieces of authorized identification. Both pieces must have your name and one must also have your address.

Examples: health card, student card, utilities bill, bank statement, vehicle insurance, library card.

3) Take an oath and have somebody who knows you vouch for you. This person must have all their identification with them and be on the voters list on the same polling station as you.

Green Party of Canada leader Elizabeth May is coming to Calgary this Tuesday for a jam-packed morning whistle stop on her leader’s tour across Canada.

On Tuesday, April 19, 2011 Elizabeth May will meet Calgarians over coffee and while mainstreeting in downtown Calgary. Come out and lift a latte with a potential leader of our country! Then saunter down the avenue (Stephen Avenue) with Greens wearing Green and Elizabeth May. When everyone reaches Calgary’s historic Trolley Car Stage, Elizabeth May will give remarks to the gathering crowd. There will be great photo opportunities—be sure to bring your cameras! (And don’t say we didn’t warn you.) The 75-minute long event will look like this:
